The Six Golden Rules of Data Backup

data backup

If you’re lucky, you are one of the few people who haven’t yet experienced the horror of a computer memory crash, or of an extreme loss of data on your computer.  To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, follow these simple steps:

1)    Check Your Computer for Free Software

Many people will rush to the store to purchase the latest and greatest software for data backups before even looking on their OS to see if they already have backup software. What’s more, this is one of the easiest ways to backup your data, because all you have to do is select the folders and files you want to backup and the system takes care of the rest

2)    Backup Often

If you’re a casual computer user without anything too important on your PC, you can probably get away with doing backup maybe once every couple weeks. But if your computer and its contents are vital to your career, personal life, or anything important, you might wish to consider backing up daily. Yes, this might be a bit extreme but backup is so easy these days that it really isn’t too much of a hassle at all

3)    Consider Online Backup

Many folks like to backup their data on a disc or some other tangible piece of media but these days it is sometimes wiser to be use online backup. After all, suppose something happened to your home that destroyed not only your computer but your CDs and USB drives as well. With online backup, though, you will always have a safe storage space. There are many great companies, like  Mozy or Carbonite to iDrive and much more and their prices vary considerably. Most of them go by a yearly basis, though, and there are some pretty flexible plans offered by these groups.

4)    Don’t Use Bad Storage Media

You know what we’re talking about here. Avoid things like floppy disks or shoddy, cheap USB drives that can fail you in an instant. Also, if you’re buying third party software to backup your data, make sure that the company is reputable and dependable. Check out the reviews of some of the backup software you’re considering so that your data can remain safe and sound.

5)    Consider Buying a Dedicated Backup Program

Yes, we realize that most PCs come with their own backup software and there are also plenty of fantastic free backup programs that can be downloaded in an instant. Still, it is always best to be too prepared rather than unprepared and there are plenty of very dependable third party backup programs that are not too expensive. These products also give you greater control over your files, allowing you to backup to FTP locations, hard disks, online servers and much more.

6)    Don’t Wait Until it’s Too Late

No matter how you choose to backup your data, make sure to do it before the inevitable virus or system crash. Far too many people treat data backup with an attitude like the data will always be there to backup. This of course isn’t the case, because then we wouldn’t need data backup in the first place. Be vigilant; be proactive. And most of all, be cautious.
